Forthcoming Special Issues

16 August 2022

As a result of demographic aging, the population of individuals in old age has increased markedly in many countries. A key factor in later life is health-related quality of life – which can contribute to morbidity and mortality. Moreover, it is a key factor for successful ageing. For these reasons, it is important to predictors and consequences of health-related quality of life in old age.

Gerontechnology: From evidence to practice

“Gerontechnology” is an emerging field addressing widespread population aging. As defined by the International Society for Gerontechnology, “Gerontechnology: designing technology and environment for independent living and social participation of older persons in good health, comfort, and safety.”

Guest editors:

Prof. Yeh-Liang Hsu, Yuan Ze University, Gerontechnology Research Center, Taoyuan City, Taiwan
Prof. Neil Charness, Florida State University, Institute for Successful Longevity, Tallahassee, Florida, USA
Dr. Henk Herman Nap, Vilans | The Dutch centre of Expertise for Long Term Care, Netherlands

Special issue information:

Many research projects aim to develop evidence-based technology systems and products to support older adults. However, few of these systems/products have been widely adopted. This special issue attempts to address this gap from evidence to practice. We invite researchers to submit manuscripts describing implementation research in gerontechnology, which addresses the challenges and practicalities in real-world settings. We hope to understand the most effective pathways from research to practical application to accelerate the development and delivery of gerontechnology solutions.

Manuscript submission information:

You are invited to submit your manuscript in the special issue anytime before the deadline 31st December 2022

Correlates of loneliness and social isolation in old age

This Special Issue aims to offer a thorough overview of these correlates. Submissions are very welcome from a variety of fields (e.g., epidemiology, health economics, public health, sociology, psychology, geriatrics, and gerontology). Particularly longitudinal studies are welcome. Moreover, we are very interested in systematic reviews/meta-analyses.

Guest editors:

Special issue information:

Recently, social isolation and loneliness have been recognized as the "new smoking" among the older population. It is also acknowledged as new geriatric giant. Therefore, it is crucial to examine the socioeconomic, lifestyle, psychological and health-related correlates of loneliness and social isolation in old age from a wider viewpoint.

Please submit your manuscript anytime before the submission deadline 28th February 2023.

Optimal Prescribing for Older Adults

In this special issue, the Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics aims to invite research papers that focus on new challenges of geriatric pharmacotherapy. Clinical or epidemiological studies that explores unaddressed or unanswered clinical scenarios in geriatric pharmacotherapy are welcome. Intervention studies, either institutional or community-based, with sophisticated study design to examine the effects of any attempt on optimizing geriatric pharmacotherapy are also our target.

Guest editors:

Prof. Fei-Yuan Hsiao, Prof. Liang-Kung Chen, Prof. Christopher Etherton-Beer,

Special issue information:

Population aging is a global phenomenon that poses various health care challenges. With the expected increase in multimorbidity and associated high consumption of drugs among older adults, understanding the quality of drug use for this population is essential. The quality of geriatric pharmacotherapy is usually assessed by several well-known indicators such as polypharmacy or potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) due to their associated adverse clinical outcomes. Nevertheless, comprehensive assessment of benefits and risks of initiating or deprescribing any medication among older adults is critical to optimize geriatric pharmacotherapy.

As comprehensive assessment of benefits and risks of initiating or deprescribing any medication among older adults is critical, particularly for novel agents with limited data in clinical trials or real-world settings, studies on these topics are welcome. Longitudinal effects of specific medications on clinical outcomes (either beneficial or harmful) among older adults are also important research topics.

You are invited to submit your manuscript at any time before the submission deadline. For any inquiries about the appropriateness of contribution topics, please contact Dr. Fei-Yuan Hsiao at [email protected] .
