Special issue information:

The analysis of biosamples occupies an important space in analytical chemistry. However, the complexity of biosamples gives rise to severe matrix effects and various other issues, and poses great challenges to the analytical process. Thus, sample pretreatment and separation techniques play important roles in biosample analysis. With the development of strategies, devices and materials, sample pretreatment (i.e., microextraction in the present context) and separation (especially chromatography, etc.) processes are vital solutions to these challenges. This special issue aims to highlight the recent advance of microextraction and separation techniques applied in biosample analysis, by collecting and publishing innovative studies in these areas. Both research and review articles are welcome.

27 July 2022

From 25-27 October, the XXI Scientific Meeting of the Spanish Society of Chromatography and Related Techniques (SECyTA) was held in Almería, Spain, organized by SECYTA and the University of Almería. In this edition, the Society celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the constitution of the "Group of Chromatography and Related Techniques", origin of the current SECYTA.

During the meeting, fundamental aspects and state of the art of chromatography and related techniques were discussed in thematic sessions devoted to clinical, pharmaceutical, environmental and food analysis, advances in sample preparation, new developments in instrumentation and omics techniques, among others. The Scientific program included five plenary lectures given by internationally renowned scientists, such as Prof. Nikolaos Thomaidis (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece), Dr. Michael Lämmerhofer (University of Tübingen, Germany), Dr. Javier Hernández (University of La Laguna, Spain), Dr. Tim Causon (University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Austria) and Dr. Roberto Romero (University of Almería, Spain). In addition, 150 communications, oral and posters, were presented and discussed. The participation of young researchers in the meeting was especially promoted, with the aim of fostering their scientific spirit and encouraging them to feel active members of this community. The program also scheduled a vendor exhibition and four vendor seminars, where sponsoring companies presented an up-date of their developments and instruments. On behalf of the Society, we would like to express our gratitude to the participating companies that year after year support this meeting. The organizers would also like to thank all speakers and participants for their stimulating support. Particular mention should also be made of Elsevier, who has agreed to produce this special peer-reviewed virtual conference issue of the Journal of Chromatography A.

Novel separation techniques for therapeutic biomolecules

Journal of Chromatography A is currently running a special issue entitled "Novel separation techniques for therapeutic biomolecules"

Guest editors:

Special issue information:

The biologics industry has entered an era of rapid transformation, and the innovation in downstream bioprocessing should be accelerating. New modalities, new technologies and new tools are developing currently. The therapeutic biomolecules have been advanced from insulins and interferons, to monoclonal antibodies and virus-like particles, and beyond to CAR-T cells and mRNA, which need the support of new technologies and new tools. Chromatography, which has played a critical role at both research and production area, can offer new opportunities to address the challenging issues, but new thinking, operation mode and materials are needed to match the different kinds of targets. For monoclonal antibodies, the mature downstream processes are facing new challenges driven by higher upstream capabilities, and single-use technology and continuous downstream would improve the process flexibility and productivity. For new gene and cell therapy products (including viral vectors, RNA, DNA and cells), due to obviously large size of biomolecules, new chromatographic media and separation modes should be developed to improve the process efficiency and capacity. In addition, based on the concept of Industry 4.0, Big Data Analytics, Modeling and Digital Twin are having a significant impact on the next-generation biomanufacturing, which need lots of novel tools. Considering these promising developments, we are pleased to launch this new Special Issue (SI) in Journal of Chromatography A.

This SI will emphasize new concepts, new materials, new technologies and applications of chromatography or other separation techniques on therapeutic biomolecules, including traditional recombinant proteins and emerging mRNA, viral vectors and CAR-T cells. The focus will be on the process development and manufacturing for the next-generation facilities. Both research and review articles are welcome.
