Special Issue - AI for intelligent decision making of process and energy systems

In the era of Industry 4.0 and beyond, process systems strive to become intelligent by integrating physical operations and information technology to the best extent. Practicing this makes process/energy systems reliable, flexible, profitable, and sustainable. This mandates the implementation of AI from conceptual design, through operational optimization and real-time control, and in supply chain management.

This special issue welcomes contributions related to the applications of AI in the context of design, scheduling, optimization and control, and supply chain management of process/energy systems.

AI applications include machine learning, reinforcement learning, soft computing, and Bayesian decision making, among other AI techniques.

Application areas should broadly fall in:

1. Design of process/energy systems

2. Scheduling of process/energy systems

3. Optimization and control of process/energy systems

4. Supply chain management of process/energy systems

Special Issue – Autonomy, Safety, and Security for Cyber-Physical Systems in the Process Industries

Next-generation manufacturing and Industry 4.0 concepts are driving the adoption of autonomous and learning technologies for the process industries based on data, sensing, and control. On one hand, greater use of computing systems opens up the possibility for new levels of safety at plants by driving more comprehensive decision-making at a plant for accident avoidance or reducing human presence in dangerous areas. On the other hand, it may open up new cyberattack surfaces, which can pose types of safety hazards which may not be a part of the traditional chemical engineering education on accident prevention. Developing advanced systems that support higher degrees of autonomy without compromising the safety and security of cyber-physical systems (e.g., industrial control systems or robots) within a plant is crucial for the flexible and profitable operation of the plants of the future.

This special issue welcomes contributions related to enhancing the autonomy of chemical processes, as well as to enhancing their safety through digitalization, or mitigating security concerns. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

· Advanced control designs that explicitly account for process safety

· Techniques for securing control, robotic, or safety systems operating in chemical plants

· Developments toward remote plant operation or full plant autonomy

· Methods to enhance process autonomy with digital twins

· Supply chain and optimization techniques supporting autonomy and security of the supply chain
